Guineas 

Guineas were my first experience raising fowl and are one of my favorite. I spend hours just watching their crazy behaviors. They are my best insect control and wonderful watch dogs. But that is not why we decided to try a few at our farm.

I had killed a rattlesnake much too close to our house and my neighbor suggested we get some guineas to warn and control the snakes. We started with five adults. The local breeder told us to keep them penned for a while but my neighbor had raised them as a kid and said they would be fine turned loose. The next five we bought to replace those that vanished were penned for about a week. The next five we bought to replace those that vanished we kept penned for about a month and then released only one at a time. 

The first year I learned the hard way how to keep my little flock alive and well.  Seven years later I am still learning but they are doing much better with higher protein feed and a safe coop to roost in at night.
